Stump Grinding in Washington, IN

Free on-site estimate for stumps of any size.

Why It Matters

The Stump Doesn't Have to Stay

A lot of the stumps we grind weren't left by us — they're from a removal years ago, a tree a previous owner took down, or storm damage nobody got around to finishing off. Daviess County's clay soil holds moisture well, which is good for growing trees but bad for rotting stumps: left alone, a stump can sit there for a decade, throwing up root suckers every spring and turning into a mower hazard nobody wants to hit. Daviess County Tree Co. grinds it down below grade so it's gone for good, not just cut flush and forgotten.

What We Handle

Single-Stump Grinding

The most common call — one stump from a removal, grind it down 4–6 inches below grade so it's ready for topsoil, sod, or a fresh planting bed.

Multiple Stumps & Whole-Yard Jobs

Clearing out several stumps at once, whether they're from one big cleanup or years of trees coming down one at a time — priced per stump with a discount for grinding more than one in a visit.

Root Flare & Regrading Prep

Grinding deep enough and wide enough that the spot is actually ready for regrading, reseeding, or a hardscape project — not just a flush cut that leaves roots to fight through later.

Cost Planning

What Stump Grinding Typically Costs

Stump diameterTypical cost range
Small (under 12 in.)$75 – $150
Medium (12–24 in.)$150 – $300
Large (24–36 in.)$300 – $450
Very large (36+ in.)$450+, quoted on-site

These are general ranges — the exact price depends on diameter, root spread, and how close the stump sits to a fence, driveway, or septic line. Grinding multiple stumps in the same visit usually brings the per-stump price down. Every job gets a free, written estimate before any work starts.

What You're Left With

Debris Handled Your Way

The ground-up wood chips can be hauled away, left as mulch for your beds, or split — your call, we ask up front instead of assuming.

No Lawn Damage

Grinding equipment works in a tight footprint compared to stump removal by excavation, so the surrounding grass and landscaping stay intact.

Insured Crew

Same coverage as every job we run — if a stump is closer to a fence, gas line, or septic system than it looks, we carry the protection that matters.

Upfront Pricing

You'll know the cost before the grinder starts, based on an actual look at the stump, not a guess over the phone.

Frequently Asked

Does grinding remove the whole root system?

No — grinding removes the visible stump and the top several inches of root, which is enough to stop regrowth and clear the spot for regrading or planting. The deeper root system stays in the ground and breaks down naturally over the following seasons; it won't send up new sprouts once the stump itself is gone.

How deep do you grind?

Typically 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is enough for topsoil, sod, or a new planting bed. Let us know during the estimate if you're planning something that needs more depth, like a paver patio or a new foundation footing nearby.

Can I plant something in the spot afterward?

Usually, yes — once the ground chips are cleared and the area is backfilled, it's ready for grass seed, sod, or a new planting. Very large stumps can leave a wider disturbed area, which we'll walk you through on-site.
